Loan disbursements through agent banking in Bangladesh declined by 18.35% in April, amounting to Tk722 crore, down by Tk162 crore from the previous month. This decrease is attributed to rising interest rates in the banking sector, which have climbed from 9% in June last year to nearly 15% currently. Rural areas saw higher loan disbursements compared to urban areas, with rural agents distributing Tk478 crore and urban agents disbursing Tk244 crore in April. Despite the decline in loan disbursements, deposits in agent banking increased significantly, reaching Tk36,963 crore by the end of March, and rising by Tk85,092 crore in April compared to the previous month.
