Sonali Bank has replaced a director, previously discussed in a controversial case, with a new appointee. The Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance ordered the removal of the previous director and appointed a new one, an additional secretary of the finance department, for a three-year term. The appointment, effective immediately, follows provisions of the Bank Companies Act, 1991, and requires the approval of Bangladesh Bank. The previous director was also removed from his position as President of the Customs Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal and reassigned to the Ministry of Finance’s Internal Resources Division. Although the official reason for the removal was not stated, the decision was made in the public interest. This change follows a public controversy involving the director’s family, which arose after a viral video led to allegations of corruption. The court subsequently banned the former director and his family from leaving the country, prompting widespread criticism and calls for an investigation into his activities.
