Bangladesh-China Renewable Energy Company (BCRECL) has activated a 68 MW solar plant in Sirajganj district, central Bangladesh, marking its successful integration into the national grid. Constructed at a cost of $87.71 million along the Jamuna River, the plant began operations in January 2023. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will purchase electricity from the facility at $0.102/kWh. Despite the challenging location prone to flooding, BCRECL strategically designed the plant to withstand inundation, utilizing elevated panels to allow for agricultural activities during dry seasons. BCRECL plans to expand its renewable energy footprint with additional projects, including a solar plant in Pabna district and a wind power plant in Patuakhali district, aimed at collectively generating 500 MW of electricity. Presently, Bangladesh generates 1,373 MW from renewable sources, with solar contributing 1,080 MW to the national energy grid.
