In the just-concluded fiscal year 2023-24, the Customs House, Chattogram (CHC) reported a significant 9.4% year-on-year increase in revenue, totaling Tk 68,562.72 crore. This surge marks the highest revenue ever generated by the port, which handles approximately 90% of Bangladesh’s total annual trade. The increase is attributed to intensified monitoring efforts aimed at curbing misconduct, bolstered by amendments to the Customs Act-1969 in June 2020. These amendments empowered officials to impose a minimum penalty for inaccurate declarations of imported items, effectively deterring false declarations and promoting compliance. Notably, imports of high-speed diesel, furnace oil, liquefied natural gas, and other essential goods contributed substantially to revenue, driven by heightened demand in the energy, power, and construction sectors. This performance underscores CHC’s commitment to governance and efficiency in customs operations, supporting sustained trade growth.
