The US government, via USAID, is providing $350,000 in humanitarian aid to aid flood-affected communities in Bangladesh’s Sylhet and Sunamganj districts. This assistance, facilitated through the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, aims to support those most affected by recent floods with cash for essentials like food, water, shelter repairs, and livelihood maintenance. Heavy monsoon rains have displaced nearly 30,000 people and affected over 2.5 million individuals in northeastern Bangladesh. Additional rainfall could exacerbate conditions, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding. The US has a longstanding commitment to Bangladesh, investing over $8 billion since its independence, including $200 million annually for development and $100 million for humanitarian aid. USAID’s programs in Bangladesh focus on enhancing food security, economic opportunities, disaster preparedness, health, education, democratic governance, environmental protection, and climate resilience.
