In the fiscal year 2023-24, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) achieved its travel tax collection target of Tk 1,735 crore within the first 10 months (July-April). By May, the collection had surpassed expectations, reaching Tk 1,985 crore. Overall, NBR collected a total revenue of Tk 3,24,378 crore during this period against a target of Tk 4,10,000 crore for the entire fiscal year, indicating a shortfall of Tk 85,000 crore. Notably, May saw the highest monthly revenue collection of Tk 35,000 crore. The increase in travel tax rates, including a new tax on domestic air travel and hikes for international travel, contributed to the sector’s revenue growth. Taxes are deducted by airlines at ticket sales, simplifying collection. Despite meeting travel tax goals, NBR faces challenges in meeting overall revenue targets due to shortfalls in other sectors like import duty, value-added tax, excise duty, transaction tax, and income tax, especially in the final months of the fiscal year.
