The Customs House, Chattogram (CHC), Bangladesh’s largest revenue collection center, collected Tk 688.66 billion in FY 2023-24, a 12% increase from the previous year’s Tk 614.65 billion. However, this collection fell short of the Tk 776.16 billion target, marking an 11.27% deficit. Despite missing its target for the past five years, CHC achieved its highest revenue in recent years.
Factors contributing to the shortfall include a dollar crisis that hindered traders from opening Letters of Credit (LCs) and discouraged imports of high-tariff products. Enhanced fines for false declarations and increased surveillance boosted revenue collection. CHC Commissioner noted that minimum penalties for false declarations, set at double the evaded tax, have reduced tax evasion.
CHC collects duties on imports through the Chattogram seaport, handling 92% of the country’s trade, and Shah Amanat International Airport. The overall 12% growth in revenue collection, despite challenges, reflects strong enforcement and monitoring efforts.
