The Bangladeshi government has approved the importation of over 2.16 million non-native vannamei shrimp seeds from India for commercial cultivation. These seeds, known as “Live White Shrimp-PL (Litopenaeus Vannamei),” are designated solely for producing new seeds. Previously, the government had also permitted the importation of over 5.11 million seeds of the same variety. The initiative aims to integrate vannamei shrimp into Bangladesh’s export portfolio, responding to demands from frozen fish exporters who seek to regain competitiveness in global markets like the US and EU. Vannamei shrimp, noted for its higher yield and affordability, is produced in over 60 countries, fulfilling 80% of global demand. Bangladesh currently meets only 2.0% of this demand, despite having a significant frozen shrimp industry that once boasted about 100 factories and ranked second among export-oriented sectors in the past decade. The move is expected to double export volumes and earnings from the frozen shrimp sector within five years, while also addressing domestic shrimp demand.
