The National Board of Revenue (NBR) of Bangladesh plans to increase VAT collection by Tk11,450 crore by FY25 through various fiscal measures. Sectors targeted include tobacco, mobile telecom services, excise duty on bank deposits, sugary items, VAT deduction at source, and electronic goods. The overall VAT target for FY25 is set at Tk1,77,000 crore, up from Tk1,51,700 crore in FY24. The tobacco sector is expected to contribute significantly with an additional Tk6,000 crore due to VAT and supplementary duty increases. Additional revenue will also come from increased taxes on mobile phone usage (Tk1,800 crore), excise duty on bank deposits (Tk1,000 crore), and other items like air conditioners and sugary products. Critics argue that such increases burden consumers, especially amid high inflation, advocating instead for more focus on income tax and reducing tax evasion. There are concerns about the heavy reliance on indirect taxes and the need to improve VAT collection efficiency to mitigate economic pressure on consumers.
