The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has finalized a five-year strategic plan for customs, aimed at modernizing procedures, reducing trade costs, and improving revenue performance. The plan, covering 2024-2028, aims to enhance trade operations, infrastructure, legal reforms, and customs officials’ capacity. The strategic plan will soon be published following a workshop at InterContinental Dhaka. Previous action plans for 2019-2022 and 2014-2017 saw significant progress, and further development is anticipated. The new plan aims to transform Bangladesh’s customs wing into a smart entity by 2041, aligning with the nation’s progress and its upcoming graduation from the least developed country category by 2026. Timely implementation is crucial for enhancing trade competitiveness and transforming customs operations using modern technology. The Customs Act 2023 has already been framed, and the Bangladesh Single Window scheme is being implemented to streamline cross-border trade. The strategic plan focuses on four key pillars: revenue management, trade facilitation and partnerships, safety and security, and development of the organization and human capital.
