The ‘Summit-Friendship Solar Village’ project in Gaibandha won the Reuters’ Global Energy Transition Awards 2024 in the ‘Projects of Impact’ category in New York on June 25. Chosen from 500 global entries, the project was recognized for its tangible impacts, including improved energy affordability and enhanced local climate resilience measures. The project features a 57.6 kW scalable solar microgrid benefiting 3,000 residents of Char Kabilpur, an isolated island in Gaibandha district. It serves as a hub for nearby islands along the Brahmaputra River, providing essential electricity outside the national grid. Summit Power International’s chairman highlighted their commitment to extending infrastructure like electricity to all of Bangladesh, particularly underserved areas like Char regions. Friendship NGO, recognized for their contributions, emphasized the solar grid’s role in fostering livelihoods, education opportunities, and community well-being. The project also reduces reliance on traditional kerosene lamps, offering cleaner, safer energy options for daily use.
