The National Security Intelligence has recommended seizing properties and taking legal action against executives of two defunct e-commerce platforms accused of defrauding customers. The Directorate General of NSI submitted reports to the commerce ministry, citing that 35 e-commerce companies disappeared with customers’ funds in 2020-21. Dhamaka Shopping, owing Tk 4.70 billion, halted operations with its director evading authorities in the US, withdrawing large sums for personal use. Aladinerprodip, facing 71 fraud cases, also ceased operations, with its CEO reportedly within the country but facing legal threats from customers demanding refunds. Despite some refunds, customers and merchants are still owed Tk 4.70 billion. The government has implemented the Digital Business Identification system to regulate the sector, where over Tk 5.34 billion was trapped with 34 platforms. Refunds totaling Tk 4.87 billion have been made to 67,070 customers as of June 2024, amidst ongoing efforts to address widespread e-commerce fraud.
