A rising number of foreign nationals are seeking work permits in Bangladesh due to a shortage of skilled managers and an education system not aligned with industrial needs. In FY23, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida) approved 16,303 applications from 101 countries, an 8% increase from the previous year. Indians topped the list with 3,159 permits, followed by Chinese (2,339), Sri Lankans (759), and Belarusians (727). These professionals fill critical roles in industries, contributing to sectoral growth and skill development. However, concerns persist about the skills gap in local graduates, prompting calls for improving educational standards to reduce reliance on foreign labor and enhance economic stability.
