Khulna exported approximately 41,000 tonnes of fish and fisheries products worth Tk 21.46 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year. This included 16,000 tonnes of shrimp valued at Tk 17.44 billion and 25,000 tonnes of white fish and other fisheries products worth over Tk 4 billion. The District Fisheries Officer disclosed these figures during a meeting ahead of National Fisheries Week 2024. Khulna has become a notable producer of various fish and fisheries products, including Hilsa, crab, kuchia, tilapia, and shrimp. The district produced a total of 125,000 tonnes of fish and fisheries products, exceeding the demand for its 2.6 million residents. In comparison, FY 2022-23 saw exports of around 45 tonnes worth Tk 28.23 billion. The Deputy Commissioner urged farmers to protect natural fish fries and called for a campaign ahead of National Fisheries Week. The campaign, themed ‘Bhorbo Mache Moder Desh, Gorbo Smart Bangladesh,’ will start on July 30, with activities including releasing fish fries at Shaheed Hadis Park.
