National Bank Ltd (NBL) continues to struggle with financial losses, though it managed to slightly reduce its deficit in the April-June quarter of 2024. The bank reported a loss of Tk 298 crore for the quarter, a 4.18% year-on-year improvement. However, total losses for the first half of the year surged 71% to Tk 1,063 crore due to high default loans.
Despite this, NBL saw a glimmer of hope with an unaudited monthly profit in June 2024, the first since December 2021, primarily due to a robust recovery drive that reclaimed around Tk 600 crore from nonperforming loans. The bank has faced four consecutive years of losses and multiple board changes, with the Sikder family seemingly losing control. In 2023, NBL reduced its losses to Tk 1,497 crore from a record Tk 3,285 crore in 2022.
