Production at three urea fertilizer factories in Bangladesh has been halted due to a gas shortage. The Jamuna, Ashuganj, and Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Factory (CUFL) have been closed since March, while one additional factory has been shut since January. The remaining two operational factories—Ghorashal and Shahjalal—produce 2,800 and 1,300 tons of urea daily, respectively. The annual urea demand in the country is 3.2 million tons, with BCIC supplying all of it. Currently, BCIC has a stock of 600,000 tons and plans to import 1 million tons, while producing 1 million tons domestically. Importing urea costs Tk 50-55 thousand per ton, compared to Tk 32-33 thousand for domestic production. With continuous gas supply, BCIC could produce 2 million tons, eliminating the need for imports. Additionally, the price of industrial gas increased from Tk 4.45 to Tk 16 per unit in June 2022, but the factories have not paid the higher rate due to financial constraints, leading to pending subsidy requests. Efforts are underway to restore gas supply to the closed factories.
