Frozen shrimp and fish exports from the Khulna region have plummeted, with export income dropping by Tk 677 crore over the past year. In the financial year 2021-22, 33,271 tons of shrimp and fish were exported, generating Tk 2,963 crore. This decreased to 28,316 tons and Tk 2,823 crore in 2022-23, and further to 25,196 tons and Tk 2,146 crore in 2023-24. Shrimp farming in Khulna has declined due to reduced farming areas, regulatory issues, and environmental changes, with a reduction of 4,786 hectares over five years. Decreased international demand and lower shrimp prices have further exacerbated the situation. The number of shrimp farmers has also decreased, with many switching to other crops. The production of shrimp has decreased by about 3,500 tons, and only 20-25 of the 41 licensed exporters are active. Many factories are struggling due to reduced shrimp availability and rising costs, leading to financial difficulties. The shift in international preference toward cheaper shrimp varieties has also impacted local exporters.
