Four large coal-fired power plants in Bangladesh, built with foreign loans, have an estimated construction cost of Tk 1.25 lakh crore. However, experts suggest that Tk 35,000 crore could have been saved if proper processes were followed. These plants contribute over 20% of the country’s total power generation, with a combined capacity of 5,160 MW. Internationally, constructing an ultra-supercritical technology coal-fired plant typically costs around Tk 12 crore per MW. Yet, Bangladesh’s projects are much higher, ranging from Tk 12.12 crore per MW in Rampal to Tk 47.46 crore per MW in Matarbari. The elevated costs, especially in Matarbari, are partly due to additional expenses like port development and land acquisition. This excessive spending impacts the overall cost of electricity in the country.
