The interim government has halted all negotiations, selections, and purchasing processes related to power and energy projects as part of reforms targeting the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act 2010. This law, often criticized as the “black law” in the power and energy sector, will no longer apply to new projects, though existing deals will continue under review. The special provision, extended multiple times since 2010, was set to last until 2026 after a five-year extension in 2021. Additionally, the government has suspended a law allowing power and gas tariff adjustments by executive order, restoring this responsibility to the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), which will now conduct public hearings before making tariff changes. The decision followed a meeting with top officials, emphasizing the need to eliminate corruption and prioritize cost-cutting and competitive tendering in future projects.
