The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is considering removing the 15% value-added tax (VAT) on metro rail tickets to reduce costs for passengers amid political changes. Discussions have been held, and once approved by the new NBR chairman, the exemption could be implemented until June 2024. Previously, a 15% VAT was imposed on air-conditioned transport services, including metro rail, but the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Company (DMTCL) had requested an exemption to encourage metro use. The VAT, if imposed, would raise the minimum ticket price from Tk20 to Tk23 and the maximum from Tk100 to Tk115. The DMTCL argued that the current ticket machines, worth Tk1 crore each, cannot handle VAT collection, making it costly and time-consuming to replace them. The metro rail, operational since April 2023, runs 196 times daily, serving 300,000 passengers and saving Tk8.38 crore daily in travel time costs and Tk1.18 crore in vehicle operation costs. The service, halted since July 20 due to vandalism during student protests, is expected to resume soon.
