According to a report by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), approximately Tk92,261 crore (around 12% of the FY24 national budget) was embezzled through 24 major banking scams between 2008 and 2023. The CPD states that this has significantly reduced public trust in the banking sector. The report blames poor governance in the sector, citing political interference, weak regulations, and a lenient legal system as contributing factors. To address these issues, the CPD has recommended several measures, including strengthening commercial banks, increasing the independence of the central bank, and enhancing the legal framework to deal with loan defaulters.
