The government has abruptly terminated the re-appointment of AKM Saiful Majid as Chairman of Grameen Bank, effective immediately, citing “public interest.” Saiful Majid had been re-appointed in April 2024 for an additional two-year term, following his initial appointment in March 2020 by the former Awami League government.
This decision comes under the interim government, led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Additionally, the government also canceled the remaining term of Palli Sanchay Bank’s Chairman, Akram-al-Hossein, appointing Mohammad Mohiuddin as acting chairman until a permanent replacement is selected.
