Bangladesh is set to become a key market for soybean products due to its growing middle class and rising demand for meat, fish, and edible oil, as noted by David Mielke of Oil World at the Soy Connext summit in San Francisco. With local production of soybean seeds limited to 800,000 tonnes annually, Bangladesh imports over 4 million tonnes to meet demand.
Kevin Roepke of USSEC highlighted that while soybean imports in Bangladesh peaked at 2.5 million tonnes in 2021-2022, they have since stabilized. He also pointed to the development of new large-scale processing plants and the government’s removal of tariffs on soybeans to boost food security, emphasizing the potential benefits of free trade agreements.
Speakers like Anja Manuel addressed the effects of geopolitical tensions and COVID-19 on global trade, stressing the need for the World Trade Organization to address trade disputes. The summit also underscored the importance of resilient global trade and food supply chains.
