Employees and student leaders from the anti-discrimination movement have called for the resignation of Md Lokman, the Managing Director (MD) of state-run Eastern Refinery Ltd (ERL), over alleged corruption. They held a demonstration at the refinery’s premises and submitted a memorandum last Thursday demanding his resignation. Sources indicate that Lokman has extended his tenure through contractual appointments twice and has been accused of shelving plans to build a new crude oil refinery under ERL ownership.
Criticism has also emerged over his involvement with a plan to construct the refinery in partnership with the controversial S Alam Group, with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) finalized just before the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Additionally, Lokman has been blamed for overseeing the construction of a cooling tower that collapsed within two years, despite costing Tk 180 million, allegedly due to contractor faults.
