Bangladesh’s reliance on US soybeans has significantly increased since the Russia-Ukraine war began, with US imports now meeting 40% of the country’s demand, up from 15% before the conflict. The war disrupted supplies from major producers like Russia and Ukraine, prompting Bangladeshi businesses to diversify their sourcing for edible oil and animal feed. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Bangladesh’s soybean imports grew by 169% year-on-year. In the marketing year 2022-23, the country imported 3.76 million tonnes of soybean products, with 1.08 million tonnes coming from the US, valued at approximately $302.95 million.
Local importers favor US soybeans for their quality, nutritional value, and supply reliability. Major companies like Delta Agrofood, Meghna Group, and City Group are increasingly sourcing US soybeans for their mills, with US soybeans preferred for their lower damage ratio compared to those from Brazil and Argentina.
