Indian power companies supplying electricity to Bangladesh are collectively owed over $1 billion, as reported by The Economic Times. Adani Power is owed approximately $800 million for electricity from its Godda coal-fired plant. SEIL Energy India is owed $150 million, NTPC nearly $80 million, PTC India $79 million (with $46 million recovered), and Power Grid Corporation of India $20 million. Despite these significant arrears, the companies continue to supply power to Bangladesh, though this situation is becoming unsustainable due to financial constraints and operational costs. The financial crisis in Bangladesh has been exacerbated by political unrest and the recent transition to an interim government. Governor Ahsan H Mansur of Bangladesh Bank has acknowledged the debt and is working with Indian power providers to address the issue. The ongoing economic difficulties raise concerns about Bangladesh’s ability to meet its international commitments.
