The total fertilizer demand in Bangladesh for the current financial year is estimated at around 69 lakh tonnes, with about 80% of this demand met through imports. Currently, government warehouses hold approximately 1.8 lakh tonnes, which is insufficient for the upcoming Boro and Rabi seasons, crucial for high crop yield. The financial year 2023-24 has a fertilizer demand of 68.42 lakh tonnes, projected to rise to 69 lakh tonnes. The government has 17.74 lakh tonnes in stock, but production issues and a dollar crisis are causing import delays. Three out of five domestic urea factories are non-operational due to a gas shortage, impacting production. Private imports are also hindered by LC complications. Officials stress the need for increased fertilizer stock, emphasizing Boro production’s importance for food security. The government plans to address these challenges by prioritizing fertilizer imports and ensuring gas supply to factories. Despite current Amon season needs being met, preparations for Boro season are underway, with assurances from the Ministry of Finance and Bangladesh Bank for necessary foreign currency to import fertilizers.
