The interim government has canceled 31 solar power projects approved under the previous Awami League administration, due to concerns about the lack of scrutiny and alleged bribery. These projects, totaling a combined production capacity of 2,645 MW, were sanctioned under a controversial special law. Additionally, 12 rental and quick rental power plants, with a combined capacity of 952 MW, are also being canceled. The rental and quick rental plants, operating on a ‘no electricity no payment’ basis, will be canceled after some delay. Issues may arise from canceling solar projects as some entrepreneurs have deposited security money. Allegations suggest that many of these projects were acquired through political connections and may have lacked proper land and investment planning. Currently, the country’s renewable power production stands at 1,378 MW, including 380 MW from off-grid sources. This decision aims to prevent unjust electricity and fuel tariff increases and to protect consumers from exploitation.
