The Ministry of Food has launched a three-month special open market sale (OMS) program to provide rice and flour at subsidized prices in flood-affected areas of 14 districts in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. From September 1, rice will be sold at Tk30 per kilogram and loose flour at Tk24 per kilogram, with packaged flour priced at Tk55 per 2 kg packet. The initiative will operate in 230 centers, distributing up to 230 tonnes of rice and flour daily, totaling 14,490 tonnes of each by the end of November. The program will cost Tk90.68 crore, funded as a food subsidy. The government has adequate food stocks due to a successful Boro harvest, with 19.73 lakh tonnes of food, including 14.60 lakh tonnes of rice, in reserve. There are no plans for foreign procurement unless necessary. Despite no overall food shortage, monitoring will continue to prevent price manipulation, with rice prices showing a recent downward trend for coarse varieties but slight increases for medium and fine-quality rice.
