Recent floods in southeast and other parts of Bangladesh have severely impacted agriculture, devastating key staple crops like rice across 23 districts. The Agriculture Ministry’s initial report estimates a loss of 1 million tonnes of crops, valued at Tk 34 billion. Of the 1.43 million hectares of farmland affected, over 26% have been flooded, with 0.21 million hectares potentially seeing total crop loss. Aus and Aman rice, as well as vegetables and fruit gardens, have also suffered significant damage.
The floods, primarily caused by the opening of sluice gates in Indian river dams, have also led to a death toll of 59 across 11 districts, with 5.45 million people impacted and 0.696 million families still stranded. Over 393,000 people have taken refuge in shelters. The government has provided financial aid, rice, and food supplies to assist recovery efforts.Â
