Recent floods in Mirsrai, Chittagong, have severely impacted the fisheries sector, causing estimated damage of Tk 374.2 crore according to the Department of Fisheries, though fishermen claim losses of around Tk 600 crore. The Muhuri project, a significant fishing area, suffered extensive damage, including the loss of 19,020 tons of fish valued at approximately Tk 370.94 crore and 46.4 lakh fish fry worth Tk 3.02 crore. Infrastructure damage totals Tk 24.8 lakh. The floods have devastated fish farms across 7,000 hectares, producing 50,000 tons of fish annually, which supplies 70% of Chittagong’s fish demand. Affected farmers are seeking government assistance to cover losses, including unpaid fish feed and medicine bills, as well as outstanding bank loans. Over 4,000 fishermen have been affected, with claims that their investments amounting to about Tk 600 crore have been wiped out. The senior fisheries officer is still gathering data on the full extent of the losses.
