The price of eggs in Bangladesh has surged recently due to a supply shortage, exacerbated by flooding in 64 upazilas across 11 districts. The floods have disrupted production, with chickens eating less due to high humidity and a significant reduction in egg production. Consumers are feeling the pinch as eggs, a staple protein source, now consume a larger portion of their budgets. Retail prices have risen, with a dozen eggs costing Tk 160 compared to Tk 150 a week ago. Despite this, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh reports only a 3% price increase over the past month. Prices have begun to decline, with wholesale prices dropping from Tk 1,180-1,190 to Tk 1,160 per 100 eggs. The recovery of affected farms is expected to take up to seven months, with the industry seeking government intervention to stabilize prices and address losses incurred by farmers.
