In July, all four telecom operators in Bangladesh reported subscriber losses, according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The total number of mobile subscribers dropped by 1.8 million, bringing the count to 194.2 million, down from 196 million in June. Despite the decline, the subscriber base remains 6.8 million higher than the previous year.
Banglalink experienced the largest loss, with 900,000 subscribers, followed by Robi Axiata (600,000), Grameenphone (300,000), and Teletalk (10,000). The decrease comes after five months of consistent growth. A significant gender gap persists in mobile ownership, with 69.3% of men and 50.9% of women owning phones. In rural areas, the disparity is more pronounced. Additionally, a rule allowing up to 15 SIM cards per person inflates subscriber counts, suggesting individual user numbers are much lower.
