Inter-country passenger train services between Bangladesh and India have been suspended for over a month and a half due to Delhi’s reluctance, despite multiple proposals from Dhaka to resume the service. While freight trains resumed operations on August 20, passenger services remain halted. The suspension began on July 18 due to a complete shutdown enforced by student protests in India, which also impacted cross-border services. Short-distance trains resumed on August 1 but were halted again on August 3. Freight trains resumed on August 12, and mail, express, local, and commuter trains followed on August 13, with intercity trains resuming on August 15. However, the Indian Railway Board has not yet allowed the resumption of passenger trains. Bangladesh Railway has sent letters and engaged the foreign ministry to address the issue, but no progress has been made on passenger services. Currently, 255 empty wagons are stranded in Bangladesh, disrupting operations. The Mithali Express, Maitree Express, and Bandhan Express services remain closed, and further talks with India are ongoing.
