Delays in data delivery from government statistical agencies are hindering the timely formulation of a rice import policy, crucial after recent floods caused a 1.0 million-tonne crop loss in southeastern districts. Over 25,000 hectares of seedbeds and 0.32 million hectares of standing Aman and Aus crops were destroyed. The food ministry has procured 1.45 million tonnes of rice and paddy, extending the Boro procurement target to 1.7 million tonnes. Despite a record 16.6 million tonnes of Aman production last year, BBS has not yet released Boro season data, vital for import decisions. Rice prices have risen by Tk 5.0-6.0 per kg in the past month due to flooding, and it is estimated that 10.0 million tonnes of rice will be needed until the next Aman harvest. Calls for importing at least 1.0 million tonnes of rice and increasing market interventions in key milling regions are growing. Bangladesh’s Boro rice production hit 20.7 million tonnes in FY’23, with a target of 22 million tonnes for FY’24.
