Agent banking deposits in Bangladesh surged by 19.76%, reaching Tk 40,073 crore by June 2024, compared to Tk 33,462 crore the previous year, according to a Bangladesh Bank report. The banking sector overall saw a 9.25% year-on-year increase in deposits, amounting to Tk 17.42 lakh crore. Agent banking, offered by 31 banks through 21,473 outlets, continues to expand, particularly in rural areas, with 86.07% of the 2.3 lakh accounts opened serving rural customers and 49.98% belonging to women. Loan disbursements through agent banking jumped 43.70% to Tk 18,741.8 crore, while inward remittances grew by 21.97%, totalling Tk 1,58,312.94 crore. This growth underscores the impact of agent banking, launched in 2013, in reaching underserved communities across the country.
