The double impact of flash floods in the southeast and drought-like conditions in the northwest has significantly affected Aman rice cultivation in Bangladesh, raising concerns about national food security. Last fiscal year, Bangladesh achieved its highest Aman rice production at 16.65 million tonnes, with 5.4 million hectares cultivated. This fiscal year, only 5.2 million hectares have been covered so far.
The Department of Agriculture Extension reports that 0.3 million hectares of land have already been washed out, and 0.1 million hectares are waterlogged and unable to be seeded. An agro-economist noted that both drought and floods have hampered rice cultivation. The Director of CAB warned that rice prices are rising and called for the removal of duties to control price increases. Another farm economist suggested exploring alternative sources like Thailand, Vietnam, and Pakistan to diversify supply beyond India.
