The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is set to cancel the facility allowing the whitening of black money through investment in land and apartments, following the government’s September 2 decision to abolish a 15% tax option for such conversions. Previously, investors could legalize undeclared money by paying 15% tax, and the NBR had been considering the cancellation due to insufficient response and questions from various sectors. In 2020-21, this scheme saw 11,839 individuals legalizing a record BDT 20,500 crore in black money, generating BDT 2,064 crore in revenue. However, this option was discontinued in the following year due to low uptake. Now, with the cancellation, black money can no longer be legitimized at a 15% tax rate; the applicable tax rate for such purposes is now up to 30% plus a 10% fine. This move affects all forms of financial assets, including cash, bank deposits, and investments in the stock market.
