Major global fertiliser suppliers have halted shipments to Bangladesh and canceled scheduled consignments due to overdue import bills totaling $80 million, including shipping costs. Suppliers from China, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and Morocco are affected.Â
Consequently, about 0.6 million tonnes of fertiliser have not been imported in the past three months. The agriculture ministry has warned of a potential fertiliser crisis starting in late December 2024 if payments are not made urgently. Agriculture adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has requested finance adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed to intervene, including instructing Sonali Bank to open letters of credit (LCs) and private banks to reduce LC margins. The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), crucial for importing non-urea fertilisers, faces challenges due to Sonali Bank’s suspension of LCs and Islami Bank’s refusal to open LCs without a full margin.
