The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has directed its customs and VAT officers to develop a time-bound automation plan for services that are still manual. An 18-point special order issued on Wednesday requires the plan by October 15, 2024, including both short- and long-term innovations funded by operational budgets. The plan should cover services outside the customs (Asycuda World) system or Integrated VAT system. Additionally, all rules and regulations must be uploaded to customs and VAT office websites by September 30, 2024. Starting October 1, duty officers will be deployed on a roster basis, and regular stakeholder discussions will be mandated to improve grievance redressal.
The order also includes environmental directives to avoid single-use plastics and requires customs officials to create a professional environment at airports. By January 1, 2025, all offices must redesign their websites according to government standards.
