Bangladesh needs $1.52 billion for fertilizer imports by March to support the Aman and upcoming Rabi seasons. The agriculture and industries ministries have requested $179 million from the finance ministry to clear unpaid bills, as foreign suppliers are halting shipments due to outstanding payments.
A dollar shortage is hindering banks from opening letters of credit (LCs), with the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) owing $80 million for previous imports. Current urea fertilizer stock is at 5.70 lakh tonnes, against a demand of 27 lakh tonnes, while non-urea stock stands at 11.23 lakh tonnes versus a demand of 32 lakh tonnes. The finance ministry is directing the central bank to ensure dollar availability and reduce LC margins to facilitate imports.
