Toufiq Aftab has resigned as Chairman of Citizen Bank after serving for over three years, taking over from Jahaanara Hock, the mother of former Law Minister Anisul Haque, following her passing. His resignation follows a government change that led to the freezing of bank accounts belonging to both him and Anisul Haque by the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit on August 14. The management of Citizen Bank announced that Aftab chose to step down due to health reasons, and during the bank’s third Annual General Meeting on September 14, Chowdhury Mohammad Hanif Shoaeb was elected as the new chairman. Hanif Shoaeb is the CEO and Managing Director of several companies under Salma Group. Despite stepping down from the chairmanship, Aftab will retain his position on the board of directors. He has also been known for his legal work as a prosecutor in high-profile cases, establishing a charitable organization to assist vulnerable prisoners, and serving as a member of the National Human Rights Commission in 2019. His leadership has been linked to Anisul Haque’s influence over the bank.
