Bangladesh will not export hilsa fish to India during Durga Puja in October, ending a long-standing tradition of sending the fish as a goodwill gesture. The interim government, unlike the previous administration, has opted to prioritize the domestic market to ensure greater accessibility of the prized fish for local consumers. Despite 50 pending export applications, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has not granted permission for exports this year. In fiscal 2023-24, Bangladesh exported 664.86 tonnes of hilsa to India. However, hilsa remains expensive in local markets, with high demand and limited supply.
