A recent drive test by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) across Dhaka, Narayanganj, Keraniganj, and Savar revealed poor performance by mobile operators in meeting service quality benchmarks. Conducted with a new €1.5 million system, the test showed Robi failed in 5 of 40 key performance indicators (KPIs), Grameenphone in 6, Banglalink in 14, and Teletalk in 26. Teletalk was the only operator to fail the BTRC’s internet service benchmarks. Call drop rates and call setup times often exceeded regulatory limits, particularly in Keraniganj and Savar. Most operators are underutilizing their higher band spectrum, affecting both 2G voice services and data service quality. Despite measures like infrastructure sharing, service quality has fallen short, raising concerns about the operators’ ambitions beyond basic telecom services.
