The National Board of Revenue (NBR) reported that over 50,000 individual taxpayers filed their income tax returns online within a month of the relaunch of its user-friendly e-filing portal on September 9. Taxpayers can now conveniently pay their taxes using cards, internet banking, and mobile financial services, and they can also obtain copies of submitted returns, acknowledgment receipts, and print their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) online.
To assist individual taxpayers with online filing for the 2024-25 assessment year, the NBR has set up a service center that can be reached by phone at 09643717171. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the number of online tax returns filed by individuals surged 115.57% year-on-year, reaching 5.26 lakh, compared to 2.44 lakh the previous year. In fiscal year 2021-22, the NBR received only 61,491 online tax returns. Despite having over 1 crore registered taxpayers, 59% did not submit their income tax returns in the 2023-24 fiscal year.
