Prof Moinul Islam has called for reducing the number of banks in Bangladesh from 61 to 30 as part of necessary reforms in the sector. Speaking at a “Dialogue for Democratic Reconstruction” organized by the Centre for Governance Studies, he criticized the Rooppur Power Plant, labeling it as the Awami League’s “white elephant,” and condemned the Adani Group’s involvement in the energy sector, citing them as examples of large-scale corruption. Moinul accused Sheikh Hasina’s relatives and supporters of significant looting, particularly within the banking sector, and questioned why controversial figures, such as those associated with S Alam Group, were permitted to control multiple banks. He highlighted that corruption has persisted across political regimes, noting similar issues during the BNP’s tenure from 2001 to 2006. Additionally, Nizam Uddin Ahmed emphasized the importance of protecting fundamental rights through constitutional reform. The event, moderated by the CGS Executive Director, underscored the slow but ongoing pursuit of a democratic state, with participation from various political representatives.
