The interim government plans to swiftly implement insurance facilities for fisher families to protect them against natural disasters and accidents, as outlined during the “DC Conference-2024.” Key stakeholders, including the Cabinet Division, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA), and Sadharan Bima Corporation (SBC), are collaborating on this initiative. The project aims to enhance social security for approximately 1.811 million registered fishers in Bangladesh. Discussions will include a potential project similar to the existing “Expatriate Workers’ Insurance” under Jiban Bima Corporation. The Department of Fisheries noted the need for such coverage due to the significant risks faced by fishers, such as storms and cyclones. Initial implementation is suggested for districts in Cox’s Bazar or the Barishal division, with assessments of families of deceased or missing fishers to determine the scheme’s scope.
