Bangladesh Shifts Trade Focus to RCEP Membership

Economic Tag: Trade

Bangladesh is shifting its trade strategy from pursuing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India to applying for membership in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the largest trade bloc led by China. The commerce ministry will submit the application this week, focusing on negotiating Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with countries like Japan and China.

RCEP encompasses nations representing nearly 30% of the global population and economy, offering Bangladesh significant opportunities for increased exports, foreign investment, and GDP growth. Joining RCEP is expected to enhance access to regional value chains, particularly in textiles, and promote trade liberalization in services, benefiting the Bangladeshi economy.
