The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has slashed import duties and VAT on eggs, edible oil, and refined sugar to curb rising food prices. Egg import duty was cut from 25% to 5%, lowering costs by Tk 13.8 per dozen. VAT on soybean and palm oil imports was reduced from 15% to 10%, with full VAT exemptions at production and trading stages until December 15. Refined sugar import duties were cut by 25%, from Tk 6,000 to Tk 4,500 per tonne. These measures aim to increase supply and ease inflation, though prices for sugar and oil remain high due to global market conditions.
