Bangladesh has significantly lowered the import tariff on rice from 62.5% to 25% to encourage imports and boost local supply. This decision, announced by the National Board of Revenue (NBR), aims to mitigate potential shortages following recent flooding that has impacted Aman paddy cultivation. The reduced tariff will lower the import cost by Tk 14.40 per kilogram. The NBR emphasized that the duty cut is intended to stabilize rice prices and ensure food security. The new rate is effective immediately, but importers must obtain approval from the food ministry to benefit from this reduction.
